A Smartphone such as the Apple iPhone is much more than just a telephone. It combines innovative hardware functions with an advanced operating system for mobile end user devices, setting new standards in the process.
Development of the Smartphone market is following a steep upward trend. Approx. 54 million Smartphones were sold around the world in the 1st quarter of 2010. That's an increase of almost 50% compared to the 1st quarter of 2009. Smartphones already own a market share of approx. 18% of all mobile phones. Forecasts from various market research institutes are expecting 400 million Smartphones to be sold in 2011, a market share of 30%.
Especially Apple with the iOS operating system and Android Smartphones are advancing quickly. With growth rates of 107% (iPhone) and 806% (Android), these two operating systems are clearly setting themselves apart from the competition, whose market shares are declining. Well over 1.5 million iPhones were sold in Germany alone, with Apple publishing worldwide numbers well over 50 million.
The app market is booming as well. Even now, over 200 000 apps are available in the Apple AppStore, and more than 90 000 in the Android Market. Over 5 billion apps were already downloaded from the AppStore. No wonder, with half of all iPhone owners buying at least one app each month. App sales exceeding 17 billion Euros are expected by 2013.
